Designed for the German Air Service to counter the appearance of the Nieuport Allied fighter, the Albatros D.III held an unparalleled superiority in the air during the Spring and Summer of 1917. |
|
Manfred von Richthofen ("The Red Baron"), Eric Lowenhardt, Kurt Wolfe, and Karl Emil Schaeffer significantly increased their kills flying the D.III. |
|
The D.III was powered by an in-line 160 horsepower Mercedes, giving a top speed of 105 mph (175 km/h). The armament consisted of two LMG 08/15 machine guns in 7.92 mm caliber, synchronized to fire through the airscrew. |
|
Other than the stretched sprue riggings, the kit is straight from the box. The paintscheme was applied according to the kit instructions. |
|
This was a quick build with no real problems. A beginner should enjoy the simple construction, while a professional will see many areas to add details and improvements. |

Kit: ESCI #9021
|
Scale: 1/72 |
Decals: Stock |
After Market Parts: None |
Customizations: Stretched sprue riggings, rudder was cut and positioned. |
Cost: I paid $4 (US) for this kit at Squadron Scalefest in 1996. An extremely good value for this price. |
Comments: This kit was easy to assemble. Painting was a little complicated due to the six color paint scheme but worth the effort. Decals adhered very well considering their age. |
